Who pays for the Forward Works Viewer?

Each region has an anchor subscriber. For example, Christchurch City Council is the subscriber for their region.

The Forward Works Viewer is a not-for-profit SaaS* tool owned by the Digital Built Aotearoa Foundation and operates under an anchor subscription model. 

This means that each region needs an ‘anchor’ organisation to cover the subscription cost (this is usually local government or an alliance), which then unlocks the region for everyone else. The state highway network and Network Outcomes Contracts (NOC) are covered by a separate subscription directly with Waka Kotahi NZTA as the Road Controlling Authority (RCA).

You can use the NFWV for free! You can view others’ projects and add your own project data to check for clashes and opportunities.

My region doesn’t have an anchor subscriber:

You’re welcome to use the NFWV as view only - but you won’t be able to add your data to the system to easily check it against other projects.

*Software as a service. This means a platform’s users have access via the internet, rather than having to install it on individual computers.

What does the subscription cover? ​ ​

The monthly subscription covers:
 
  • access to all features of the Forward Works Viewer
  • unlimited licences for users in the region
  • an onboarding process for all organisations in the region that adopt the software, including data discovery, data upload, training and collateral, assistance with launching the software, and assistance with business processes to embed the software
  • continual upload of data to the Forward Works Viewer using our extract-translate-load process
  • unlimited support from our helpdesk to all users in the region

The subscription also covers the overheads of running the Forward Works Viewer, such as hosting, maintenance, bug fixes etc., and pays for the small team operating the system (read more about Open Plan here).  Any profit is reinvested back into the system for continuous improvement of the tool. 

A note on our pricing model

We employ a population-based pricing model, as this seems like the fairest way to determine region size and usage of the system.  However, our pricing model can be negotiable as we acknowledge that one size doesn’t fit all funding models, and we don’t want cost to be a barrier for entry.  The purpose of the Forward Works Viewer is to promote collaboration, reduce clashes and enable more efficient project planning – making money is not our intention.  Our overall goal is to reduce our subscription fees when we reach a point of sustainable growth – there’s not many companies that can say that!
